The University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s Center for Louisiana Studies (CLS) announces “Gun Violence in Louisiana: A Symposium,” on Monday, September 28, 2015. The free day-long event will be at the UL Lafayette Alumni Center, 600 E. St. Mary Blvd. in Lafayette, LA. The community is invited to attend. Seating is limited and reservations must be made at http://www.eventbrite.com/e/gun-violence-in-louisiana-a-symposium-tickets-18456639305.

The program features scholars in a variety of fields from universities and colleges across Louisiana. Topics to be discussed include Gender and Gun Violence, Gun Violence from Mental Health and Human Rights Perspectives, Race and Gun Violence, and Gun Violence in Historical and Public Health Contexts. Concurrently, John Richie will be showing his film Shell Shocked and clips from his upcoming 91%. The full program is listed below.

CLS Director Michael S. Martin states, “In keeping with the educational mission of the Center for Louisiana Studies and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, this symposium will focus first and foremost on providing information that can be used to frame reasonable discussions on what clearly is one of the most significant problems our state faces today. No one, no matter what their stance on the gun control debate, can deny that gun violence is taking the lives of far too many Louisianians.”
