Neitzel Awards in Louisiana Studies

The Neitzel Family Endowed Awards in Louisiana Studies recognize outstanding research and mentorship in fields related to Louisiana Studies, including but not limited to history, folklore, languages, music, geography, anthropology, archaeology, literature, architecture, and the visual arts.

Undergraduate Research Award ($1,000)

Faculty Research Excellence Award ($1,000)

Eligibility

Student Awards: Open to UL Lafayette undergraduates and graduate students for work completed during the most recent academic year, including the preceding summer.

Faculty Award: Open to UL Lafayette faculty, either through self-application or nomination by a colleague or student. This award honors a faculty member who embodies and sets an example for excellence in Louisiana Studies research. It is not intended to recognize routine job duties, but rather a broader commitment that inspires and advances the field. The award may take the form of a grant to support the recipient’s ongoing or future research.

How to Apply / Nominate

Student Awards: Submit an abstract of no more than 250 words by May 31, along with a PDF of the paper (or equivalent documentation if project-based).

The abstract should include:

  • Project overview
  • Connection to Louisiana Studies
  • Semester/course completed
  • Applicant’s name, contact information, and level (undergraduate or graduate)

Note: Theses/dissertations are not eligible, though a single chapter may be submitted.

Faculty Award: Submit either a self-application or a nomination letter (250 words) describing how the faculty member exemplifies excellence in Louisiana Studies research and the impact of their work.

Selection & Recognition

Recipients are chosen by the Neitzel Awards Selection Committee of the Center for Louisiana Studies. Winners are announced in mid-June.
